Short answer: the label tells you how much perfume oil is in the bottle. Cologne has the least (about 2 to 5%), EDT about 5 to 15%, EDP about 15 to 20%, Parfum and Extrait de Parfum about 20 to 40%, and attar is pure oil with no alcohol at all. More oil usually means longer lasting, but not always louder.
These ranges are industry conventions, not legal rules, so every brand does it a little differently. That is why our Club De Nuit Intense Man EDT vs EDP vs Parfum video got almost 1 lakh views: the versions do not just differ in strength, they smell different too.
The concentration table
| Type | Fragrance oil (approx.) | Typical longevity | Projection | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eau de Cologne (EDC) | 2 to 5% | 2 to 3 hours | Light | ₹ |
| Eau de Toilette (EDT) | 5 to 15% | 4 to 6 hours | Medium to strong at first | ₹₹ |
| Eau de Parfum (EDP) | 15 to 20% | 6 to 8 hours | Medium to strong | ₹₹₹ |
| Parfum / Pure Parfum | 20 to 30% | 8 to 12 hours | Closer, denser | ₹₹₹₹ |
| Extrait de Parfum | 20 to 40% | 10 hours plus | Close to strong | ₹₹₹₹ |
| Attar / CPO | Up to 100% oil, no alcohol | 8 to 24 hours on skin | Close to the skin | ₹ to ₹₹₹₹ |
| Aqua Parfum | Oil in water, no alcohol | 6 to 9 hours | Soft | ₹₹ |
What actually changes between versions
1. Longevity
More oil means more of the slow-evaporating base notes (woods, musks, amber, vanilla) stay on your skin. That is why an Extrait of the same scent usually lasts longer than the EDT.
2. Projection is not the same as strength
Alcohol is what throws the scent into the air. An EDT has more alcohol, so it often projects more in the first hour, then drops off. A Parfum or Extrait has less alcohol and more oil, so it often sits closer to the skin but lasts much longer. An attar, with no alcohol at all, stays very close but can last a full day.
3. The smell itself
Perfumers rarely just add more oil. They often change the formula. In perfumery, every material has its own "impact" (how strong it smells) and "odour life" (how long it lasts). Changing the balance changes the character. That is why an EDT is often brighter and fresher, while the Parfum or Extrait of the same name is rounder, sweeter and darker, with more of the base notes showing.
4. Price
Higher concentration costs more because fragrance oil is the most expensive part of a perfume. But an Extrait that needs 3 sprays can work out cheaper than an EDT that needs 8.
A real example: Club De Nuit Intense Man
1. Armaf Club De Nuit Intense Man: the Pure Parfum
The EDT opens with a sharp lemon and smoky birch blast that many people find harsh at first. The Pure Parfum is smoother, more fruity and more ambery from the first spray, and it lasts far longer. Same idea, different personality. That is why it is our fourth best-selling Arabic perfume.
- Notes (brand): Top: Pineapple, Bergamot, Blackcurrant, Apple, Lemon; Heart: Birch, Rose, Jasmine; Base: Musk, Ambergris, Patchouli, Vanilla
- Performance: 12 hours plus.
- Best for: Parties, weddings, beast-mode lovers
- Price at Fragstalk: 150ml bottle ₹5,100 · 10ml decant ₹530
What is an attar, exactly?
Attar (ittar) is India's oldest form of perfume. Traditional attars were made by distilling flowers like rose or mitti into sandalwood oil in Kannauj. Modern Arabic attars, often called CPO (concentrated perfume oil), are fragrance oils without alcohol.
- Pros: lasts very long, no alcohol, a small bottle lasts months, great for layering.
- Cons: stays close to the skin (less projection), oils can mark light fabrics.
Our best-selling attar is Naseem Musk Taharah (₹275). Read our guide to the best attars for men.

FAQs
Which lasts longer, EDP or EDT?
EDP usually lasts longer because it has more fragrance oil (about 15 to 20% vs 5 to 15%). An EDT may project more in the first hour.
Is Parfum stronger than EDP?
Parfum has more oil, so it lasts longer, but it often sits closer to the skin than an EDP because it has less alcohol.
What is the difference between Parfum and Extrait de Parfum?
Both are the highest concentrations. Brands use the names differently; Extrait de Parfum usually signals the richest version, often 20 to 40% oil.
Is attar better than perfume?
Attar lasts longer on the skin, has no alcohol and is very economical, but projects less. Perfume sprays project more. Many people wear both.
Do EDT and EDP of the same perfume smell the same?
Often not exactly. Brands frequently change the formula between versions, so the EDT may be fresher and the EDP or Parfum sweeter and deeper.
Which concentration is best for Indian summer?
A fresh EDP or Extrait, because EDTs evaporate very quickly in heat. Attars with fresh or musky notes also work well.
